Frequently Asked Questions

These are some of the questions we hear most commonly surrounding pre and post operative protocols.

Q: When can I drive after joint replacement?

A: There are 3 criteria to begin driving: 1. Minimum of 2 weeks out from surgery, 2. No longer taking narcotic  pain medications, 3. You must feel safe to drive and slam on the breaks if necessary.

Q: When can I fly after joint replacement?

A: The risk for blood clot is highest in the first month after surgery so we generally recommend a minimum of 4 weeks. However, each individual's recovery is different and therefore may require more time before they are able to fly.

Q: When can I go to the dentist after joint replacement?

A: We recommend you wait 3 months after surgery before seeing the dentist, even for routine cleanings due to the increased risk for joint infection. If you are required to go sooner, you will likely be prescribed antibiotics.

Q: Do I need antibiotics for dental visits after the 3 month mark?

A: No, we do not require long-term antibiotic prophylaxis.

Q: When can I get a manicure or pedicure after joint replacement?

A: We ask you do not have these done a minimum of 2 weeks before or 2 weeks after surgery.

Q: Do I need to stop my supplements before surgery?

A: Yes, we ask you stop all non-prescription supplements 1 week prior to surgery and do not resume taking them for 1 week after surgery.

Q: Will I have stitches that need to be taken out after surgery?

A: No, we generally use dissolvable sutures under the skin that do not need to be removed.

Q: Do I need to change my bandage after joint replacement?

A: We recommend leaving your original surgical bandage in place until your two week post-op visit unless the bandage becomes >50% saturated or begins peeling off.

Q: Can I take Advil, Aleve, or Motrin instead of the prescribed meloxicam after surgery?

A: No, all of these medications are NSAIDs (anti inflammatories) and cannot be taken concurrently. Once you are cleared to discontinue the meloxicam, you may be able to resume the other medications.
